Social Workers: Generations Strong

Wednesday, March 4, 2020

Since 1984, March has officially been designated  a month to recognize and acknowledge the contributions to the quality of life made by America’s half-million professional Social Workers.

The Department of Veterans Affairs (VA) is the largest employer of Social Workers, with nearly 16,000 masters prepared Social Workers and 1,500 graduate trainees on staff. This is more than any other governmental or non-governmental agency.

The 2020 Social Work Month theme is, “Social Workers: Generations Strong.”  This year’s theme focuses on the past and present role of Social Workers in helping the most vulnerable populations in society.

Social Workers play a key role in identification of social determinants of health as it relates to suicide prevention and treatment.  When Social Workers help Veterans with housing, procuring food, transportation, avoiding/escaping violence, and developing social supports, they are making a difference in preventing suicide attempts and reducing suicidal ideation.

Social Workers have been and continue to stand ready to help our nation in times of crisis, including war and natural disasters such as floods, earthquakes and hurricanes. Social Workers for generations have worked with other professions, community groups, lawmakers, civil rights and other organizations to bring equal rights for all, including women and people who are African American, Latino, Native American, Lesbian, Gay, Bisexual, Transgender (LGBT), and of various cultural, ethnic, and religious groups.

Social workers are an integral part of the VA and provide care in all facets of our health care system.  Social workers support and advance the mission of the Veterans Health Administration by providing high quality psychosocial services to Veterans, their families, and caregivers.  Their skills and talent are permeated across the Department by serving in many diverse capacities and levels of leadership.  The Care Management and Social Work Program Office includes: Caregiver Support Program, VA Fisher House and Family Hospitality Program, Intimate Partner Violence Assistance Program, Social Work Program, Transition and Care Management Program, and VA Liaisons for Health Care Program.

The Clarksburg VA Medical Center will be hosting a table outside the Patriot Store throughout the month to promote various topics/programs within our Social Work Service. All are welcome to stop by and learn what social work can do for you.
