National Disability Employment Awareness Month
National Disability Employment Awareness Month
October is National Disability Employment Awareness Month (NDEAM), an annual effort to increase awareness of the invaluable contributions and diversity of our nation’s population. Workplaces that welcome the talents of all people, including people with disabilities, aid in the development of an inclusive community and strong economy.
The purpose of National Disability Employment Awareness Month (NDEAM) is to educate the workforce about disability employment issues and celebrate America's workers with disabilities. This year's theme is "Increasing Access and Opportunity". This year actually marks 30 years of the Americans with Disabilities Act (ADA) and 75 years of NDEAM.
In this spirit, the Louis A. Johnson VA Medical Center is recognizing National Disability Employment Awareness Month (NDEAM) in October and celebrating the vast contributions of people with disabilities. Employees and/or Supervisors are encouraged to learn more about this topic via the US Department of Labor’s Office of Disability Employment Policy (DOL-ODEP), Job Accommodation Network (JAN), and Employer Assistance and Resource Network (EARN). To celebrate this month of inclusion, special emphasis training is also encouraged and available within the Talent Management System (TMS) on topics such as Americans With Disabilities Act: An Overview for Managers (NFED 4504188), Using Special Hiring Authorities (VA 35241), and Disability Etiquette (VA 41588).
